Sagar-Mitra (Friends of Oceans) is an educational initiative led by a school students for saving our planet with a small everyday action. Through everyday engagement in recollecting plastic, Sagar-Mitra volunteers are lying a path for saving lives of innocent birds, fish, animals and living forests in the ocean. Around 10-11Million Metric Tons of plastic ends up in the oceans every year killing countless lives of birds, fish, animals and ocean greenery. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) does not treat ocean plastics and global warming as separate issues; rather, they view them as deeply interconnected crises. Sagar-Mitra is built on a simple yet powerful philosophy:
Head – Heart – Hands
This approach ensures that awareness is not limited to knowledge — it becomes emotion and action. Volunteers at Sagar-Mitra are determined to take a small action every day to save the planet from their own homes. Sagar-Mitra Volunteers collect plastic at home and bring it to school once a month and then it is further sent to recycling. Sagar-Mitra began in 2011 in Pune with a simple yet powerful insight and today, it stands as a model of how grassroots action can scale into systemic change. Sagarmitra Abhiyaan (Friends of Oceans) works to mitigate the threat caused by plastic pollution by creating a cultural shift in public perceptions and behaviors concerning plastic pollution and creates an ethical shift in student-to-parent outreach.
Every 10 kgs of clean & dry plastic we collect will help save 1 sq km of ocean life. We have seen that there are ~50,000 planktons (ocean trees) in a single drop of ocean water. How many such drops will be saved under 1 sq km of the ocean?
Any recognition of Sagarmitra Abhiyan is a feather in the cap of each of our 3,75,000 volunteers. They won the ‘Ocean Hero’ award in 2015 from The 5 Gyres Institute and the ‘Earth Day’ award in 2024 from the International Earth Day Foundation.
